10-Day Grand Kenya Safari — Bush to Beach
Ten days. Seven parks. One continuous road across the full breadth of Kenya.
Gallery
This ten-day itinerary is the most complete overland safari in Kenya. It starts at the northern edge of the country's safari circuit — Samburu, 350 kilometres north of Nairobi — and ends on the southern coast at Diani Beach, having crossed seven protected areas, the equator, the Rift Valley, and the ecological boundary where savannah gives way to coastal forest. The route covers roughly 1,800 kilometres over ten days, with no single day exceeding five hours of driving and most days closer to three. The pace is deliberate — this is not a rushed checklist but a journey designed for people who want to feel Kenya unfold beneath their wheels.
The sequence of parks has been chosen to build towards the Mara and then unwind towards the coast. Samburu comes first because it is the most remote — you get the long drive out of the way early, and the northern landscape sets a dramatic opening act. The Aberdares, on day three, provide the sharpest ecological contrast: from 35-degree desert heat to misty montane forest at altitude, with the Ark's floodlit waterhole as the centrepiece. Lake Nakuru on day four is the flamingo interlude — a single-night stop that packs an extraordinary density of wildlife into a compact Rift Valley park. Then the Mara for three nights — the heart of the trip. By day five, when you arrive at the Mara gate, you have already seen four parks and close to 200 bird species. The Mara is the reward.
This itinerary is designed for the first-time visitor to Africa who wants to do it once and do it properly, and for the returning traveller who has done the short trips and is ready for the full journey. It is the trip you plan a year in advance. It is the trip your friends will ask about for years afterwards. It is not cheap, but it represents extraordinary value — ten days of full-board accommodation, a private 4x4 vehicle, a dedicated driver-guide, and experiences that range from meeting the last northern white rhinos to watching a dhow sail past your dinner table on the coast. The only extras are drinks, tips, and optional activities. Everything else — meals, park fees, accommodation, transport — is included.
The final three days shift the mood completely. Amboseli on day eight is the last big wildlife stop — elephants, Kilimanjaro, the swamps, Observation Hill — and it provides the classic images that define a Kenyan safari. Tsavo West on day nine is the transition: red elephants, volcanic cones, the hippo-viewing chamber at Mzima Springs. By the time you reach Diani on day ten, the air is humid, the vegetation is tropical, and the Indian Ocean is turquoise and calm inside the reef. You check into a beach resort, order a cold drink, and watch the dhows sail past. You have crossed the full width of Kenya. Nothing has been rushed. Everything has been earned.

Nairobi to Samburu — Into the North
Depart Nairobi at 7:00 AM and drive north through the Central Highlands, crossing the equator at Nanyuki. Lunch at your Samburu riverside lodge. Afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and elephant herds moving through the doum palms. Your first taste of northern Kenya's distinctive wildlife.
Full Day Samburu — Special Five
Full day in Samburu with morning and afternoon game drives. Morning: river circuit for predators. Afternoon: eastern plains for gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich. Optional Samburu manyatta visit. Midday by the river, watching elephants cross the shallows.
Samburu to Aberdare — The Ark
Morning game drive in Samburu, then drive south to the Aberdare mountain range. Arrive at the Ark Lodge. Spend the afternoon and evening on the viewing decks above the floodlit waterhole. Elephants, buffalo, and bushbuck arrive after dark. The Ark buzzer alerts you when rare forest animals appear overnight.
Aberdare to Lake Nakuru — Rift Valley Flamingos
Early morning on the Ark's decks. After breakfast, descend into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. Lunch at the rim lodge. Afternoon game drive: the flamingo-lined lake, white and black rhino sanctuary, tree-climbing lions, and rare Rothschild giraffes.
Nakuru to Maasai Mara — The Great Savanna
After breakfast, drive west across the Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara. Lunch at your tented camp or lodge. Afternoon game drive from 3:30 PM — the Mara at golden hour. Lions on kopjes, elephants on the plains. Sundowner at the escarpment edge.
Full Day Maasai Mara — River & Predators
Morning drive for active predators. Picnic lunch by the Mara River among hippos and crocodiles. During migration season (July–October), position at river crossing points. Afternoon drive in a different sector. This is the heart of the safari.
Mara Full Day — Your Last Drive on the Plains
A final full day in the Mara. Morning and afternoon drives, tracking whatever remains on the wish list. By now you move through the reserve with an understanding of its rhythms. The last of the great plains on this journey.
Mara to Amboseli — Kilimanjaro Country
Depart the Mara after an early breakfast for the scenic drive across the Rift Valley to Amboseli National Park. Late lunch at your lodge. Afternoon game drive: Amboseli's famous elephant herds with Kilimanjaro rising behind them. Visit Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the park and the mountain.
Amboseli to Tsavo West — Mzima Springs
Sunrise game drive in Amboseli — the best light for elephants against Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, drive east to Tsavo West. Lunch at Kilaguni Serena Lodge on the veranda overlooking a waterhole. Afternoon: Mzima Springs underwater viewing chamber, Shetani lava flow walk, game drive back to the lodge at sunset.
Tsavo to Diani Beach — Savannah to Ocean
Final morning game drive at 6:30 AM through Tsavo West. After breakfast, drive east towards the coast. The air changes — humid, salty, tropical. By early afternoon you arrive at your Diani Beach resort. Check in, walk onto the white sand, and wade into the Indian Ocean. Ten days. Seven parks. One continuous road.

2 Days Lake Nakuru Safari Tour
Lake Nakuru shifts colour throughout the day — blue to grey to pink — as clouds of lesser flamingos lift and resettle along its alkaline shoreline. On this two-day trip from Nairobi, you descend into the Great Rift Valley, stretch your legs at the famous viewpoint, and spend the afternoon tracking white rhino through fever tree forests. The park is compact enough that you'll cover it thoroughly, but rich enough — lions in the yellow acacias, leopards dozing on branches, rare Rothschild giraffes browsing the treetops — that you'll want two days. Overnight at a lodge perched on the rim with the lake glittering below.
4-Day Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru Safari
Four days across Kenya's two most photographed natural stages. You start in the Maasai Mara — golden savannah stretching to a flat horizon, lions draped over kopjes, cheetah scanning the plains from termite mounds. Two full days of game drives give you time to follow a hunt, wait by a river crossing, or simply park under an acacia and watch the wildebeest stream past. Then you come down from the plateau into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru, where the landscape snaps from wide to intimate: flamingos wading in the shallows, rhinos moving through fever trees, and if you're patient, a leopard draped over a branch a few feet above your vehicle.
6 Days Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru – Amboseli Safari
Kenya's greatest-hits route, done properly. Six days through the Mara, Nakuru, and Amboseli with no wasted time. In the Mara, your guide works the radio network to find the big cats — the reserve has the highest lion density in Kenya — while you watch wildebeest herds string across the plains. At Lake Nakuru, the flamingos paint the shoreline pink against the yellow acacia forest. In Amboseli, the elephants steal the show under Kilimanjaro's snow-streaked dome. Each park gets two drives — morning and afternoon — which means you catch wildlife in the best light and the coolest hours.
