4-Day Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru Safari
Four days between Kenya's two most famous faces — the endless savannah and the flamingo shore
Gallery
The drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara covers roughly 280 kilometres and passes through the Rift Valley viewpoint before dropping into Maasai country. The last stretch into the reserve is a gravel road through villages where Maasai herders drive cattle alongside the highway, wearing the traditional red shuka cloth.
The Mara itself is 1,510 square kilometres of open grasslands, riverine forest, and acacia-dotted plains that form the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest cross from the Serengeti into the Mara in search of fresh grazing, and the river crossings — especially at the Mara River — are what safari dreams are made of: churning water, crocodiles, and thousands of animals plunging in. Outside migration season the resident game is still extraordinary — the Mara has Kenya's highest lion density and reliable cheetah sightings.
On day three, you retrace your route partway before turning north towards Lake Nakuru. The transition from savannah to Rift Valley lake is one of Kenya's most dramatic landscape shifts. Nakuru rewards patience — the longer you sit by the lakeshore, the more the park reveals. Four days is the minimum to do both parks justice. Any shorter and you spend more time driving than game-watching. Any longer and you might want to add Amboseli or Naivasha.

2 Days Lake Nakuru Safari Tour
Lake Nakuru shifts colour throughout the day — blue to grey to pink — as clouds of lesser flamingos lift and resettle along its alkaline shoreline. On this two-day trip from Nairobi, you descend into the Great Rift Valley, stretch your legs at the famous viewpoint, and spend the afternoon tracking white rhino through fever tree forests. The park is compact enough that you'll cover it thoroughly, but rich enough — lions in the yellow acacias, leopards dozing on branches, rare Rothschild giraffes browsing the treetops — that you'll want two days. Overnight at a lodge perched on the rim with the lake glittering below.
6 Days Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru – Amboseli Safari
Kenya's greatest-hits route, done properly. Six days through the Mara, Nakuru, and Amboseli with no wasted time. In the Mara, your guide works the radio network to find the big cats — the reserve has the highest lion density in Kenya — while you watch wildebeest herds string across the plains. At Lake Nakuru, the flamingos paint the shoreline pink against the yellow acacia forest. In Amboseli, the elephants steal the show under Kilimanjaro's snow-streaked dome. Each park gets two drives — morning and afternoon — which means you catch wildlife in the best light and the coolest hours.
Rift Valley Bird Watching Safari — 5 Days, 5 Lakes
The Rift Valley lakes are one of the world's great birding circuits, and this five-day car route connects five of them — Naivasha, Elementaita, Nakuru, Bogoria, and Baringo — in an itinerary that puts you in front of 450-plus species. Greater and lesser flamingos in clouds of pink. African fish eagles calling from dead trees. Pelicans, storks, kingfishers, bee-eaters, secretary birds, and if you work the reeds at Lake Baringo, the unmistakable flash of a malachite kingfisher. A specialist birding guide with a trained eye and an encyclopaedic ear runs the trip.
