7-Day Kenya Highlights — Samburu, Aberdare, Nakuru & Mara

This itinerary is designed for the first-time visitor who wants to see as much of Kenya as possible in a week, without feeling rushed. It covers roughly 1,200 kilometres in a logical loop — north to Samburu, south through the Aberdares and Nakuru, then west into the Mara — with driving distances that keep most days under five hours. Each park was chosen because it adds something the previous park did not offer, and the sequencing means the route builds towards the Mara as the climax.

Samburu comes first, and it sets the tone. At 350 kilometres north of Nairobi, it is the most remote park on the circuit, and the landscape — dry riverbeds, doum palms, rocky kopjes — signals immediately that you are not in the familiar Mara-Amboseli belt. The two afternoon and morning drives target the Special Five, and the riverside camp gives you the feeling of having travelled somewhere genuinely remote. From Samburu you drive south towards the Aberdares, crossing the equator and climbing into a very different world: montane forest at 2,200 metres, where the air is cool and the sounds are birdsong and the rustle of elephants in the undergrowth. The Ark, a lodge built as a viewing platform above a waterhole, is unlike any other Kenyan accommodation. You do not go on game drives here — the animals come to you.

Lake Nakuru is the third act and the sharpest contrast. From the forest of the Aberdares you descend into the Rift Valley, where the landscape opens wide and the lake appears as a pale blue disc ringed by green acacia. Nakuru is a compact park — you can cover the main circuits in a single afternoon — but it packs an extraordinary density of wildlife into a small area. The flamingos, the rhinos, the tree-climbing lions, the rare Rothschild giraffes — all in the space of a few square kilometres. The lodge sits on the rim with the lake glittering below. Breakfast on the terrace here is one of the best starts to any day on this circuit.

The Maasai Mara is the final destination, and you arrive on day five after a scenic drive across the Rift Valley floor. You have two full days here — morning and afternoon drives on both days — which is enough time to cover the Mara Triangle, the Musiara Marsh (famous for its lions), and the Mara River crossing points. By now your safari eye is sharp. You can distinguish a cheetah from a leopard at a distance. You know to watch the behaviour of impala — if they are all staring in one direction, there is probably a predator there. You stop photographing every zebra and start waiting for moments: a lioness calling her cubs, a fish eagle diving, the sun setting behind a flat-topped acacia.

Accommodation across the seven nights varies with the park character — riverside tented camp in Samburu, tree lodge in the Aberdares, rim lodge at Nakuru, classic Mara camp for the finale. All are full-board with private bathrooms. The food is consistent across the route: cooked breakfasts, packed or buffet lunches, three-course dinners. You will not go hungry. The vehicle is a pop-top 4x4 Land Cruiser with a driver-guide who stays with you for the full week — by day seven, they will feel like part of the group.
