The Kenya Rift Valley lakes form part of the Great Rift Valley system that runs from Lebanon to Mozambique. From a birding perspective, they are extraordinary — a chain of alkaline and freshwater lakes that support some of the highest concentrations of birds anywhere on the continent. This five-day itinerary connects five of them in a logical south-to-north route. Lake Naivasha (1,884m) is the highest and the only freshwater lake on the circuit. Its papyrus-fringed shores and surrounding acacia woodlands support over 350 bird species. Lake Elementaita is a shallow soda lake, part of the UNESCO-listed Kenya Lake System, hosting great white pelicans and large flamingo populations. Lake Nakuru National Park is the most famous birding site in Kenya — the flamingo spectacle here is well documented. The lake can hold up to a million lesser flamingos, though numbers fluctuate dramatically with water levels and alkalinity. Lake Bogoria, farther north, has in recent years hosted the largest flamingo concentrations as Nakuru's water levels have risen, diluting the alkalinity. Bogoria's shoreline is volcanic — geysers and hot springs that can shoot steam up to 5 metres. Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake, has the highest species count of any of the Rift Valley lakes — over 470 bird species have been recorded here, including the rare white-backed night heron and Hemprich's hornbill. Day-by-day breakdown of your adventure
Nairobi to Lake Naivasha — Freshwater Birds
Depart Nairobi at 7:00 AM and drive 90 minutes to Lake Naivasha. The day begins with a boat safari on Kenya's highest Rift Valley lake (1,884m). While the boat drifts among hippo pods, your birding guide will be calling out species: African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher, great cormorant, long-tailed cormorant, African darter, grey heron, black-headed heron, goliath heron, purple heron, squacco heron, hadada ibis, glossy ibis, African spoonbill, yellow-billed stork, and — with luck — the rare African skimmer. After the boat ride, a walk along the shoreline trails and acacia woodland produces up to 60 more species: sunbirds, weavers, barbets, cisticolas, and the striking white-fronted bee-eater. Afternoon transfer to Lake Elementaita, a shallow soda lake and UNESCO World Heritage Site that hosts large numbers of greater and lesser flamingos as well as great white pelicans. Evening bird walk along the shoreline before sunset, with views of the sleeping warrior hill. Overnight at a lakeside lodge.
Lake Nakuru — Flamingo Spectacle
Rise early and drive 30 minutes to Lake Nakuru National Park for a full day of birding. The lake itself can hold up to a million lesser flamingos — when conditions are right, the shoreline is a solid pink crescent visible from space. Alongside them, greater flamingos wade in deeper water. The acacia forest behind the lake shelters the Verreaux's eagle owl, African hoopoe, white-browed coucal, and several species of barbet and woodpecker. The open savannah zone produces secretary birds, kori bustards, and grey crowned cranes. The southern end of the lake is also one of Kenya's best leopard viewing areas — a bonus for the mammal list. Picnic lunch at the Baboon Cliffs viewpoint overlooking the lake. Continue game and bird drives through the afternoon. Return to Elementaita for dinner and overnight.
Lake Bogoria — Hot Springs & Flamingo Clouds
After breakfast, drive two hours north to Lake Bogoria, the most dramatic of the Rift Valley soda lakes. The northern shoreline is a field of hissing geysers and bubbling hot springs that can shoot steam up to 5 metres high. The alkaline water supports massive blooms of cyanobacteria, which in turn support enormous flocks of flamingos — often more concentrated here than at Nakuru, with the added spectacle of steam rising through the pink haze. Birding along the shoreline trails: black-necked grebe, cape teal, African jacana, black-winged stilt, and several species of migratory wader. The cliffs above the lake are one of the best sites in Kenya for Verreaux's eagle. Late afternoon drive to Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake that feels entirely different — greener, more vegetated, with far more bird variety. Check into your lodge on the lake shore. Evening bird walk in the lodge gardens: the red-and-yellow barbet, the beautiful sunbird, and white-billed buffalo weavers.
Lake Baringo — Boat Safari & Specials
A full day at Lake Baringo, the jewel of Rift Valley birding. The morning boat safari drifts among the lake's seven islands, getting close to the resident hippos and crocodiles while the guide navigates to reliable bird locations. The star species here include the Goliath heron (the world's largest heron), northern carmine bee-eater, little bittern, and the elusive white-backed night heron, which roosts in the dense reeds around Gibraltar Island. The cliffs of the islands host Hammerkop nests and colonies of little swifts. The fish eagle show — where a guide whistles and throws a fish, and an eagle swoops in from 200 metres — is a tourist cliché, but the speed and precision are stunning. After lunch, explore the acacia and fig woodland around the lake shore. Baringo is famous for its owl sites. With a local guide who knows the roost trees, you have a solid chance of Verreaux's eagle owl, pearl-spotted owlet, and greyish eagle owl. The final target is the northern masked weaver, a species restricted to this area. Over 100 species in a single day at Baringo is common for experienced birders.
Morning Birding — Return to Nairobi
One final dawn walk along the lake shore before breakfast. The early light produces the last targets: Hemprich's hornbill, bristle-crowned starling, and the mouse-coloured penduline tit. After breakfast, begin the five-hour drive back to Nairobi, arriving by mid-afternoon. Your guide will share a trip list — typically 250 to 350 species over the five days.

2 Days Lake Nakuru Safari Tour

Then you come down from the plateau into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru, where the landscape snaps from wide to intimate: flamingos wading in the shallows, rhinos moving through fever trees, and if you're patient, a leopard draped over a branch a few feet above your vehicle.
6 Days Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru – Amboseli Safari
Kenya's greatest-hits route, done properly. Six days through the Mara, Nakuru, and Amboseli with no wasted time. In the Mara, your guide works the radio network to find the big cats — the reserve has the highest lion density in Kenya — while you watch wildebeest herds string across the plains. At Lake Nakuru, the flamingos paint the shoreline pink against the yellow acacia forest. In Amboseli, the elephants steal the show under Kilimanjaro's snow-streaked dome. Each park gets two drives — morning and afternoon — which means you catch wildlife in the best light and the coolest hours.
