7 Days Amboseli – Tsavo – Mombasa Beach Holiday

Elephants and Kilimanjaro, red-dusted Tsavo, then sand between your toes on the Indian Ocean

Gallery

This is the route for people who want wildlife and beach in a single trip without a domestic flight. You cover 700 kilometres by road from Nairobi to Mombasa, stopping at two of Kenya's most dramatic parks along the way.

Amboseli comes first. The park lies 240 kilometres southeast of Nairobi, close enough to reach for a late lunch and an afternoon game drive on day one. The next morning you get the best of Amboseli — dawn over Kilimanjaro, the elephants moving across the dried lake bed, dust rising around their legs. The photography here is peerless: the mountain, the elephants, the wide-open plains. You will fill a memory card before breakfast.

Tsavo West is a three-hour drive east. The landscape changes completely: volcanic cones, black lava flows, and the green oasis of Mzima Springs, where 250 million litres of filtered rainwater gush out of the Chyulu Hills every day. An underwater viewing chamber lets you watch hippos walk along the bottom of the pool and crocodiles glide past. The transition to Mombasa on day five is a culture shock in the best way — from arid bush to humid coastal air, from the silence of the savannah to the bustle of a Swahili port city. Sarova Whitesands on Bamburi Beach is a well-run resort with a long stretch of white sand, multiple pools, and a watersports centre. The included snorkelling trip takes you to the Mombasa Marine National Park reef — healthy coral, angelfish, moray eels, and if you are lucky, a passing turtle. Seven days, two worlds, one journey. It is the trip you recommend to friends who say they do not have time for a proper safari.

6 Days Samburu, Aberdares, and Amboseli Safari

A northern circuit that stitches together three of Kenya's most characterful parks. You start in Samburu: a dry, red-baked landscape threaded by the Ewaso Nyiro River where the "Samburu Special Five" — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and the long-necked gerenuk — live nowhere else in Kenya. From there you climb into the misty Aberdares to sleep in a tree lodge above a floodlit waterhole, watching elephants ghost in and out of the dark. The final act is Amboseli — open plains, massive elephant herds, and if the clouds part, Kilimanjaro rising eighteen thousand feet behind them.

6 Days Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru – Amboseli Safari

Kenya's greatest-hits route, done properly. Six days through the Mara, Nakuru, and Amboseli with no wasted time. In the Mara, your guide works the radio network to find the big cats — the reserve has the highest lion density in Kenya — while you watch wildebeest herds string across the plains. At Lake Nakuru, the flamingos paint the shoreline pink against the yellow acacia forest. In Amboseli, the elephants steal the show under Kilimanjaro's snow-streaked dome. Each park gets two drives — morning and afternoon — which means you catch wildlife in the best light and the coolest hours.

2-Day Amboseli Express Safari

Amboseli in two days is tight but completely worth it. You leave Nairobi in the morning, arrive for lunch at a lodge with Kilimanjaro watching over you, and spend the afternoon with the park's legendary elephant herds — massive bulls with tusks that scrape the ground, tight-knit family groups moving between the swamps. The next morning you catch sunrise over the mountain — those famous photographs of elephants silhouetted against snow-capped Kibo are shot at this hour — then game-drive your way back to the gate. It's a weekend wildlife fix that still delivers the best of one of Kenya's most photographed parks.
