Hell's Gate & Lake Naivasha Day Trip
Cycle past zebras, walk through gorges, drift among hippos — Kenya's most active day trip
Gallery
Hell's Gate got its name from the German explorer Gustav Fischer, who described the narrow gorge cutting through red cliffs as looking like the gates of hell. Today it's one of Kenya's most accessible parks and one of the few where you can walk or cycle among wildlife without a vehicle. The park's main draw is its geology — Fischer's Tower, a 25-metre volcanic plug, and the Central Tower gorge, a narrow slot canyon carved by prehistoric Lake Naivasha's overflow. The geothermal activity is visible everywhere: steam vents hiss from the rocks, and the Olkaria power station generates electricity from the same volcanic heat. The cycling is on dirt roads — roughly 14 kilometres round trip to the gorge — past grazing zebras, giraffes, warthogs, and the occasional buffalo. There are no large predators in Hell's Gate, which is what makes the walking and cycling possible. After the park, Lake Naivasha provides the contrast — a freshwater Rift Valley lake, home to over 400 bird species and a healthy hippo population. Crescent Island, the walking safari stop, is technically a peninsula. It was the filming location for Out of Africa's famous flying-over-the-lake scene. You walk on foot among animals that have grown accustomed to human presence, with the lake shimmering on three sides.

Itinerary
Day-by-day breakdown of your adventure
Hell's Gate National Park & Lake Naivasha
Leave Nairobi by 6:30 AM for the 90-minute drive to Hell's Gate National Park, descending into the Great Rift Valley with a brief photo stop at the escarpment viewpoint. At the park gate, collect your mountain bike and set off on the dirt road that cuts through the park. Zebras and giraffes graze on either side — you'll pass within 20 metres of them, the closest you can get to big game on a bicycle anywhere in Kenya. Stop at Fischer's Tower, a 25-metre volcanic plug, then park the bikes and walk into the narrow gorge. The rock walls close in, streaked with red and orange mineral deposits. Steam vents hiss from cracks in the rock — geothermal activity from the Olkaria power station nearby. After cycling back to the gate, drive to Lake Naivasha for lunch at a lakeside restaurant. In the afternoon, climb aboard a small motorboat and push out onto the lake. Hippos surface in pods around the boat, blowing spray, while cormorants and pelicans perch on dead acacia trees sticking out of the water. Fish eagles call from the shoreline. The boat drops you at Crescent Island, a peninsula that juts into the lake. No predators live here, so giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and wildebeest graze unbothered as you walk among them on foot. The lake shimmers in all directions, and the sun drops behind the Mau Escarpment as your guide leads you back to the boat. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving by 6:30 PM.

Mount Longonot & Lake Naivasha — 2 Days of Hiking & Lake Life
Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano that rises 2,776 metres above the Rift Valley floor, its crater a forest-filled bowl nearly two kilometres across. The climb takes about an hour and a half — a steep, dusty trail that switchbacks up the flanks with increasingly staggering views of the valley and Lake Naivasha spread out below. From the rim you can circle the entire crater, peer into the forested maw, and on clear days see all the way to Lake Nakuru. The afternoon belongs to Naivasha: a boat ride past snorting hippos and fish eagles, then a walking safari on Crescent Island where giraffes and zebras graze with the lake shimmering all around you.
Rift Valley Bird Watching Safari — 5 Days, 5 Lakes
The Rift Valley lakes are one of the world's great birding circuits, and this five-day car route connects five of them — Naivasha, Elementaita, Nakuru, Bogoria, and Baringo — in an itinerary that puts you in front of 450-plus species. Greater and lesser flamingos in clouds of pink. African fish eagles calling from dead trees. Pelicans, storks, kingfishers, bee-eaters, secretary birds, and if you work the reeds at Lake Baringo, the unmistakable flash of a malachite kingfisher. A specialist birding guide with a trained eye and an encyclopaedic ear runs the trip.
8-Day Kenya Extended Classic — Samburu to Mara via Nakuru & Naivasha
Eight days is the point where a Kenyan safari stops being a highlights reel and starts being an immersion. This route takes the classic Samburu-Aberdare-Nakuru-Mara circuit and adds two crucial stops: Ol Pejeta, where you meet the last northern white rhinos and walk through the chimpanzee sanctuary, and Lake Naivasha, where you trade the vehicle for a boat and walk among giraffes on Crescent Island. The extra day in the Mara gives you three full game drives instead of two, and the Naivasha afternoon — a boat ride past hippos, a walk among zebras and giraffes — provides the breathing space that a week-long safari needs.
