3-Day Tsavo East & West Safari — From Mombasa

Tsavo is not one park but two — Tsavo East and Tsavo West, separated by the Mombasa Highway. Together they cover roughly 22,000 square kilometres, making Tsavo the largest protected area in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. This three-day circuit from the coast gives you both sides of the park: the vast open plains and red-dusted elephants of Tsavo East, and the volcanic drama and spring-fed oases of Tsavo West.

Tsavo East is characterised by flat, semi-arid savannah studded with baobab trees and crossed by the Galana River. The landscape is open — visibility extends for kilometres — which makes it excellent for spotting game. The park's elephants are famously red, coloured by the iron-rich volcanic soil they dust-bathe in. The Aruba Dam, a man-made reservoir on the Voi River, attracts large numbers of birds and is a reliable spot for elephants, buffalo, and the occasional lion at midday. The Yatta Plateau, a 290-kilometre lava flow that runs parallel to the highway, is one of the longest in the world. Tsavo East is also where the man-eating lions of Tsavo — the pair that halted construction of the Uganda Railway in 1898 by killing an estimated 35 workers — originated. The lions are still there, though considerably better behaved.

Tsavo West is wetter, greener, and more geologically dramatic. The Chyulu Hills, a range of young volcanic cones, rise on the park's northern boundary. The Shetani lava flow — a black expanse of jagged basalt from an eruption about 200 years ago — stretches across the landscape near the park's main gate. Mzima Springs, the highlight of the western circuit, is a series of crystal-clear pools where 250 million litres of filtered rainwater gush out of the Chyulu Hills every day. An underwater viewing chamber — essentially a glass box sunk into the main pool — lets you watch hippos walk along the bottom on their tiptoes, and crocodiles glide past at eye level. The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, a fenced area near the Ngulia hills, protects both black and white rhino in a landscape of acacia and Commiphora scrub.

This itinerary starts from your Mombasa beach resort — you are picked up at dawn and driven two hours to the Bachuma Gate. Each night is spent at a different lodge: one in Tsavo East (Voi Wildlife Lodge, Ashnil Aruba, or similar) and one in Tsavo West (Kilaguni Serena or Ngulia Safari Lodge). Both have swimming pools — welcome in the Tsavo heat — and terraces overlooking waterholes where animals come to drink. Meals are full-board, and the food is hearty: grilled meats, fresh vegetables, and Kenyan-style curries. On day three, after a final morning game drive and breakfast, you are driven back to your beach resort by early afternoon — salty, sunburned, and already looking through your photos. This is the safari you book when you are already at the coast and want adventure without a flight. The contrast between the dry bush and the Indian Ocean — experienced within the same day — is one of Kenya's great travel pleasures.
