3-Day Samburu Safari Express

Samburu National Reserve, 350 kilometres north of Nairobi, occupies 165 square kilometres of semi-arid savannah on the southern edge of Kenya's northern frontier. The reserve is defined by the Ewaso Nyiro River, which flows down from the Aberdare Mountains and cuts a green ribbon through an otherwise parched landscape. When the dry season bites, the river becomes the reserve's entire economy — every mammal, bird, and reptile in the ecosystem gravitates to its banks. This makes game viewing unusually reliable. You position your vehicle along the river circuit and the animals come to you.

The Samburu Special Five are species adapted to arid conditions that do not occur in the southern parks. The Grevy's zebra is the most striking — taller than the common plains zebra, with narrower stripes that do not extend to the belly, and large rounded ears that give it a donkey-ish appearance. There are fewer than 3,000 left in the wild, and Samburu is one of their last strongholds. The reticulated giraffe has a coat pattern of sharp-edged chestnut polygons separated by narrow white lines — it looks like a giraffe designed by a graphic artist. The gerenuk is perhaps the strangest: a long-necked antelope that stands upright on its hind legs to browse acacia leaves, front hooves resting delicately on a branch. The Beisa oryx, with its straight rapier horns and striking facial mask, and the Somali ostrich — the males have blue-grey necks and thighs that turn vivid blue in breeding season — complete the set.

Samburu also holds lions, leopards, elephants, and crocodiles. The leopards here favour the large trees along the riverbank, and sightings are common because the vegetation is more open than in the Mara. Cheetahs hunt the open plains east of the river. The elephant population is healthy and unusually relaxed — Samburu's elephants see fewer vehicles than their Mara cousins, and they tend to linger at water crossings rather than retreating.

Two nights at a riverside camp — Samburu Sopa Lodge, Samburu Intrepids, or similar — give you two full days of game drives. The morning drive starts at 6:30, when the light is soft and predators are still active from the night. You break for breakfast under an acacia, surrounded by the sound of go-away birds and hornbills. The midday hours are hot — Samburu sits just 130 kilometres north of the equator — and you spend them at camp, watching the river from a shaded deck. The afternoon drive runs from 4:00 to sunset, when the golden light turns the landscape copper. An optional visit to a Samburu manyatta introduces you to a culture that has herded cattle, goats, and camels in this landscape for centuries. The Samburu are cousins of the Maasai, and their beaded jewellery and red shukas are similar, but their dialect, clan structure, and relationship to the land are distinct. Bring a sun hat, a buff for the dust, and a camera with a good zoom. The birds alone — vulturine guineafowl, golden-breasted starling, martial eagle — are worth the trip.
