6 Days Samburu, Aberdares, and Amboseli Safari

Rare northern species, a tree hotel over a waterhole, and Kilimanjaro's snowy crown

Samburu National Reserve sits in the arid north, about 350 kilometres from Nairobi, where the landscape shifts from highland farmland to semi-desert scrub. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the park's lifeline — during dry spells every animal in the reserve gravitates towards its banks. This is where you will find species that do not occur in southern parks like the Mara or Amboseli: the Grevy's zebra with its thin stripes and comically large ears, the reticulated giraffe with its crisp geometric patterns, and the gerenuk, an antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse acacia branches like an awkward ballerina.

The second phase of the trip — the Aberdares — is completely different. Here you are in mountain forest at 2,200 metres, staying at the Ark, a lodge built to resemble Noah's vessel, with viewing decks and a bunker-like hide overlooking a waterhole and salt lick. Elephants, buffalo, and bushbuck visit throughout the night. There is an optional buzzer in your room that rings when something rare — a leopard, a bongo — appears. The experience is unlike any other lodge in Kenya. You do not go on game drives. The animals come to you.

The final destination, Amboseli, is Kenya's postcard park. The combination of open plains, swamp-fed by Kilimanjaro meltwater, and Africa's highest mountain rising behind makes for the kind of photographs that sell safari brochures. The elephant herds here are among the most studied in the world — Cynthia Moss has run the Amboseli Elephant Research Project since 1972 — and they are remarkably relaxed around vehicles. The six-day circuit covers roughly 1,000 kilometres through central and northern Kenya. It is a proper journey, not a series of day trips.

5-Day Samburu, Ol Pejeta & Aberdare — Northern Circuit

This is Kenya's northern loop, and it does not feel like the postcard Mara-Amboseli-Nakuru circuit at all. Samburu is dry, red, and wild — the Ewaso Nyiro River threads through a landscape of doum palms and rocky outcrops, and the wildlife is different: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich. Ol Pejeta brings you face to face with the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, plus a chimpanzee sanctuary and the Big Five on a single conservancy. At the Ark in the Aberdares, you sleep above a floodlit waterhole and watch elephants emerge from the dark. Three parks, five days, no crowd.

3-Day Samburu Safari Express

Samburu in three days is the northern Kenya starter pack — short enough for a long weekend, long enough to track down the Special Five and understand why this dry, rust-coloured reserve has a devoted following among safari regulars. The Ewaso Nyiro River pulls every animal in the reserve to its banks. You spend two nights at a riverside lodge, game-drive the river circuit at dawn and dusk, and spend the hot midday hours on your veranda watching elephants cross the shallows. No crowds, no convoy of minibuses — just the river, the doum palms, and the sound of weaver birds.

7-Day Kenya Highlights — Samburu, Aberdare, Nakuru & Mara

Seven days across four parks that each represent a different face of Kenya. You start in Samburu for the northern specialists — Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe — then climb into the misty Aberdares to sleep above a floodlit waterhole. From the forest you drop into the Rift Valley at Lake Nakuru for flamingos and rhinos, before the grand finale: two full days in the Maasai Mara, the savannah that has defined the idea of safari for a century. It's a greatest-hits compilation that earns its name.
