5-Day Samburu, Ol Pejeta & Aberdare — Northern Circuit

Northern Kenya feels different from the moment you leave the Nairobi-Nanyuki highway. The air dries out. The landscape opens up. The acacia scrub gives way to thorn bush and the occasional baobab. This is not the green, manicured savannah of the Mara — it is harsher, emptier, and for anyone who has already done the southern parks, it is the logical next step.

Samburu National Reserve sits on the edge of the arid northern frontier, 350 kilometres from Nairobi. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the park's spine, and during the dry season every animal in the reserve clusters along its banks. This is where you find the Samburu Special Five — species adapted to the drier north that do not occur in the Mara or Amboseli. The Grevy's zebra, with its narrow stripes and round ears, is the largest and most endangered of the zebra species. The reticulated giraffe has a pattern so precise it looks painted. The gerenuk stands on its hind legs to browse acacia branches — an antelope that evolved to reach what others cannot. The Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich complete the set. Lions, leopards, and elephants are here too, and because Samburu sees a fraction of the Mara's vehicle traffic, sightings tend to be more intimate.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies two hours south of Samburu, set between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares on the Laikipia Plateau. It is 364 square kilometres of golden grassland and the most important rhino conservation site in East Africa. The conservancy holds over 140 critically endangered black rhinos — the largest population in the region. But what draws people here is the northern white rhino enclosure. Fatu and Najin, a mother and daughter, are the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. They live under 24-hour armed guard, and visitors can approach the enclosure and speak with the rangers about the IVF programme that represents the last hope for the subspecies. It is a profoundly moving encounter — not a zoo exhibit, but a front-row seat to extinction in slow motion. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, established in 1993, is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees live — rescued from the illegal pet and bushmeat trade across East and Central Africa and now living in a riverine forest enclosure divided into two troops. Game drives here deliver all the Big Five, and the conservancy's community model — it is owned by a Kenyan non-profit, and all tourism revenue supports conservation — means your visit directly funds the work.

The third stop, the Aberdares, is a complete change of ecosystem: from semi-arid savannah to montane rainforest at 2,200 metres. The Ark is a lodge designed to resemble Noah's vessel, built around a waterhole and salt lick in the Salient area of Aberdare National Park. The structure has four viewing decks, a ground-level bunker with porthole windows at waterhole height, and an optional buzzer system in each room that alerts you when something rare — leopard, giant forest hog, bongo — appears overnight. Elephants, buffalo, and bushbuck visit the waterhole throughout the night. You eat dinner, take a glass of wine to the viewing deck, and wait. The animals come.

This five-day circuit works because each park offers something the last one did not. Samburu is the specialist — rare northern species in a dramatic riverine landscape. Ol Pejeta is the conscience — conservation at the sharp edge, with the Big Five as a bonus. The Aberdares is the contrast — forest, mist, and the quiet drama of a waterhole. Together they form a route that covers roughly 500 kilometres of northern Kenya, with comfortable lodges and tented camps at each stop. Bring layers — the Aberdares can be cold after dark — and a good pair of binoculars.
